Description:
The SouthEastern Spain Soil Health Living Lab – GREENNOMED (GREEN INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS IN MEDITERRANEAN ENVIRONMENTS), is located primarily in the Campo de Cartagena (Region of Murcia) and Almería province. The soil health of this territory has been deteriorated by non-sustainable agriculture practices, and a semi-arid climate that is changing into extreme temperatures, longer doughs periods and enhanced flood risk. Many of the factors responsible for the poor soil health are threating the Mar Menor Lagoon, a protected area under special environmental regulations aimed at reversing eutrophication and ecosystem disruption arising from decades of poor management of the regional economic, social, and urban development.

Challenges:
The Living Lab focuses on addressing the decline in soil organic matter and biodiversity caused by decades of intensive agricultural practices.

Potential Solutions:
Innovative solutions include implementing regenerative farming practices, using natural pesticides, optimising fertigation management, promoting agro-system biodiversity management and employ new fertilisation protocols aimed at mobilising nutrients in the soil and avoiding the pollution of underground wate bodies.
