ALGA-SOIL BLOOM is a field demonstration project designed to restore essential soil functions in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve through a safe, measurable and locally adaptable nature-based solution. The prototype combines mature compost and certified clean biochar to improve soil structure, water retention and carbon storage; traceable fractions from microalgae and washed Atlantic macroalgae to stimulate soil biological activity; and selected beneficial microorganisms supplied in protected or encapsulated form. Because the project sites do not present the same risks, the treatment is adapted to each location. Landaberde is managed conservatively because of elevated Pb, Cr, V and Zn, while Apeadero and Atxaga receive gradual, low-dose treatments suited to hydromorphic soils. Results will be compared with untreated control plots using physical, chemical and biological indicators. The final outcome will be a practical protocol explaining what can be applied, where it is safe, how it should be monitored and how it can be replicated.

The project will benefit the Urdaibai ecosystem and the organisations and people responsible for its protection and management: local communities, municipalities, environmental authorities, land managers, Living Lab partners, SMEs and infrastructure operators. It will provide them with a tested method for improving soil health while controlling risks in wetlands, metal-affected areas and other sensitive sites.
